Akiba Drumer: A Short Life Summary
Akiba Drumer was born in Poland and raised by a single father. As he grew up, he was beaten by his stepmother who didn't believe in Jewish practices and religions, for she was not Jewish, and only married Akiba's father for his riches at the time. After killing herself, Akiba Drumer wound up marrying a beautiful young women at the age of eighteen. They had a son named Elijah and they were living happily until 1944 when their family went into hiding.
Being scared as ever, they were taken to a concentration camp. Akiba's wife was murdered right on the spot, so that made Elijah and Akiba alone. They thought that they were headed for death, which they were, but it was Elijah who won that race. He was thrown up into the air and shot in front of Akiba. Akiba then frowned upon the Nazis.
Having a hard time in the camp, he grew weaker and weaker by the day. Akiba was very incapable of making it as far as someone who was much younger than him. Although only in his early 30's, he had gotten enough beatings from his stepmother. He tried to keep a positive attitude and help others, but it wasn't working. He knew that he was coming towards the end, and couldn't help but think about death.
One day was normal and beautiful until selection. Selection is where they pick certain prisoners to go towards their death. Akiba had been complaining about how he knew that he wouldn't make it. He was chosen for selection, and during round two, he had fallen. As unfortunate as that was, he was threatened by Nazis to beat him to the death.
Telling this story to the Nazis in the ambulance, Akiba explains his entire life until his final breath.
